Program Speakers: Martin Thomas (Norfolk City Councilman and Lawyer) He spoke about the Wards Corner area and opportunities for new businesses that were in the works. One of the opportunities he mentioned was the Granby street Shops where the Sentara spaces are now; adding a Physical Therapy site and the possibility of a doughnut shop. He also spoke about the plans for a Kroger Marketplace being put in where the old KMART was on Military Hwy and Norview. Questions were asked about where the cities priorities are and Councilman Thomas mentioned that in the last few years the focus was on First: The Wellness Ctr (which was bought by the city) Second, Titustown area where the city purchased and tore down old apartments (crime was out of control in that area) and 3rd the Denbeigh Park area (Texas Streets) which is being revitalized. There is a Wards Corner Now website (M. Thomas started) that you can check out for any new updates on Wards Corner. Also, some members mentioned the bike lanes again and why they were put in. Councilman Thomas said that they are still studying the bike lanes and will determine which ones work the best for the area. For now all the lanes and polls will remain until that study is complete. Suburban Acres 4th of July Parade & Picnic
Happy first day of summer! And that means in less than two weeks, we will have the Suburban Acres Civic League’s July 4th Parade and Picnic.
This year we are having a sidewalk parade at Suburban Park Elementary School, rather than a street parade. Decorate your kids and pets, wagons, strollers, hand trucks, battery operated small vehicles, bicycles, tricycles, and anything else that can be pushed or pulled. The sidewalk parade will start at the Galveston Blvd. and Carl St. playground and go around the back of the school grounds. We encourage all neighbors to come and support, cheer, and wave to the folks in the parade, and then stay and enjoy a hot dog, chips, and a drink with your neighbors.

We are listed as a Bronze Bike Ready City which is great, but were looking to improve that. There is still a paving plan looking for opportunities to add bike and people paths on old roads that are wider than needed for the cars. You will notice that changes already, for example the Granby Street bridge bike lane and the lane all the way down Lewellyn. Several side streets already marked or marked with barriers.
