MON April 14 SACL Meeting, updated location
Monday evening’s (April 14, 2014) Suburban Acres Civic League meeting will be held at Norfolk Collegiate School due to last-minute scheduling issues with Suburban Park Elementary (floor maintenance occurring during spring break). Our guests are Councilperson Terry Whibley, and mayoral candidates Michael Muhammad and Jane Bethel (Norfolk municipal election is May 6th) .
Monday Evening March 10th Meeting
Monday evening March 10th is an EARNN (Environmental Awards for Recycling in Norfolk Neighborhoods) meeting. We need at least 30 attendees to claim our EARNN points!
Our special guest speaker is Fleta Jackson, from the City of Norfolk’s Stormwater Division. Doors open at 6 pm for refreshments; meeting starts at 6:30.
All year long the civic league members conduct recycling and sustainability projects–like our adopt-a-spot cleanups, participation in the Great American Clean-up, and featuring meeting speakers who address conservation and sustainability topics. We earn points for these efforts–as well as the neighborhood’s recycling (blue bin) set out rate, and earn a cash rebate from the city that is used for neighborhood activities.
Please bring a family member, friend, or other guest to our meeting Monday night! 50/50 raffle, and door prizes (featuring a $25 Harris Teeter gift card).

Meadowbrook residents kept in the dark on school site redevelopment
The City of Norfolk solicited requests for proposals for the site of Meadowbrook Elementary School without contacting or consulting the Meadowbrook Civic League, which might have provided helpful input on parameters for future redevelopment. The city received three development proposals, none of which meet the criteria outlined in the civic league’s position statement, primarily due to the residential density of the proposals, and lack of enough green space being maintained. A public forum was finally held on February 19th after inquiries and disappointment was expressed by the Meadowbrook Civic League. The smallest of the three proposals will result in 22 single-family homes, the largest specifies up to 90 apartment units.
The former Meadowbrook School, shuttered in 2009, is on Preservation Virginia’s 2011 list of Most Endangered Historic Sites in Virginia
You can review the proposed concepts, see the developers’ pitches, and provide input for the development of the site at THIS LINK

February 2014 Newsletter
The February 2014 edition of The Suburban is here online, and on the way to your front door! We withheld publication of this issue until today, February 5th, at the request of Harris Teeter due to the announcement of the K&K Square/Wards Corner Harris Teeter grand opening on February 19th.
What’s in the February edition? The opening of Harris Teeter and other shops at K&K Square this month…a growing movement to convince the city to restore property tax relief for seniors and the disabled…a February 18th rally to bring mail processing back to Church Street Station—and faster mail service to all of us…and yet another special election, this time to fill former Delegate Lynwood Lewis’s seat in the 100th House of Delegates District on February 25th.
Hopefully you’ll find some “news you can use” in this month’s edition!
