Join your neighbors for the annual Independence Day Parade and Picnic…Decorate your bikes, wagon, car, scooter, pets, or spouse/better half and join the parade! There are door prizes, and parade prizes. If you’re a baker, bring a desert and compete in the annual bakeoff. Hot dogs, chips, and drinks are provided. We also have deejay Michael Harold on site spinning upbeat tunes. Everything is wrapped up by noon. Hope to see you there, or along the parade route!

Suburban Acres Civic League is again pleased to offer our GROW Youth Leadership Scholarship. The scholarship underwrites tuition for the eXcel Leadership Academy, as well as additional opportunities facilitated by the civic league and our business and non-profit partners:
eXcel Leadership Academy, July 15-18, 2014. A program of LEAD Hampton Roads and the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, eXcel’s goal is to prepare youth for leadership positions within the community and region. The program provides leadership skills training, an up close chance to meet outstanding visionary leaders, and a “behind the scenes pass” to the Hampton Roads region.
The Suburban Acres Civic League will offer two activities during the summer focusing on local community groups and their interaction with local government and business. Missions and challenges of not-for-profit organizations, and how they help government will be emphasized.

The City of Norfolk solicited requests for proposals for the site of Meadowbrook Elementary School without contacting or consulting the Meadowbrook Civic League, which might have provided helpful input on parameters for future redevelopment. The city received three development proposals, none of which meet the criteria outlined in the civic league’s position statement, primarily due to the residential density of the proposals, and lack of enough green space being maintained. A public forum was finally held on February 19th after inquiries and disappointment was expressed by the Meadowbrook Civic League. The smallest of the three proposals will result in 22 single-family homes, the largest specifies up to 90 apartment units.
The former Meadowbrook School, shuttered in 2009, is on Preservation Virginia’s 2011 list of Most Endangered Historic Sites in Virginia

Chris Perry, on behalf of Suburban Land Management, will be attending civic league meetings in Wards Corner, Talbot Park, and Suburban Acres in February to unveil his plans and design for a brand new Harris Teeter anchored shopping center at the southeast corner of Wards Corner. The City of Norfolk Registrar’s office is looking for registered voters who would like to be part of the Election Team for this year’s elections at the Suburban Park Elementary School precinct.
Becoming an election official is easy – just a few hours of training by the Registrar’s staff, plus you will be paid $125 for the day’s work. While helping run the election is a long day, it is rewarding to know that you are helping your neighbors vote – one of our most important rights as Americans.
If you are interested in becoming an election official, please call Stella Jones of the Norfolk Registrar’s office at 664-4353.
Neighbors interested in participating in planning for the future development of our corner of Norfolk alongside City Council, etc. are invited to attend the Greater Wards Corner Task Force meeting.
