Suburban Acres Civic League Supports Suburban Park Elementary Field Trip

The Suburban Acres Civic League joined 16 other donors to fund a DonorsChoose.org project that sent 100 PreK-2 students from Suburban Park Elementary School to the Nauticus Museum in April.  Below is the letter we received from the teacher at Suburban Park Elementary.  Thanks to YOU, our community, for helping these young scholars learn about the importance of the local waterways to Norfolk and Hampton Roads.

Dear Suburban Acres Civic League,

Thank you so much for the donation. The children thoroughly enjoyed the trip. There was so much to see, many of them didn’t want to leave.

The trip began with a slide show of creatures in the waterways and artifacts for the children to actually touch and ask questions about. The children were fascinated by the exoskeletons and other parts of water creatures. The presenter even spoke with them individually. Some of the children stayed back in the room with the giant screen to enjoy a movie on water creatures.

There was more to explore so we went off to tour the Naval museum which included a tour of a real battleship-The Wisconsin. The children enjoyed it so much they wanted to stay in the bunk-beds! Inside the museum tour, they saw sharks, drove speedboats over the water (only virtually!), and marveled at the water creatures all around them. They even got to use the dual hoist cranes to move cargo containers! Even now, after a month, as we discuss jobs people do, while reading a book about captains my students have exclaimed, “That’s like the one who drove the ship!” Thank you for making this amazing experience possible!

With gratitude,
Mrs. D Luc

[Update] Dynamic Speed Sign for Thole Street

The Suburban Acres Civic League requested that the City of Norfolk install dynamic speed signs in both directions on Thole Street to deter speeders.  It appears the City is ready to install the westbound sign; the eastbound sign will be installed later.

The Board of Directors of the Civic League recommends that the westbound sign (heading towards Granby Street) be located along the curb at 536/544 Thole Street, based on the City of Norfolk’s Division of Transportation analysis of optimum sites for this solar-powered sign.

A link to Google Maps shows the location of the proposed sign on westbound Thole Street:  https://goo.gl/maps/wk55XrX2DiV7XxLL7

Below is a picture of what the sign will look like – this picture was taken on Lakewood Drive.

The civic league General Membership will discuss and vote on the approval of the westbound dynamic speed sign at its general meeting on May 13, 2019.  Please come!

Wards Corner Draft Plan Synopsis

In an effort to help our members, Board Member Karen Mayne put together the below synopsis of the recent Wards Corner Draft Plan put out by the city.  We handed this out at the most recent SACL general meeting on April 8, 2019.

It’s a concise and straightforward presentation of the main takeaways and an excellent way to get up to speed on what to expect in terms of next steps from the city in planning and developing the Wards Corner area.

We hope the synopsis is helpful!  Bring your discussion items to the next general meeting.  We will also remind members and re-post the synopsis closer to the next meeting.

Thinking about the future of Wards Corner is exciting stuff for our area!

Thank you Karen for putting this together!
