This Saturday April 18th is KEEP NORFOLK BEAUTIFUL DAY, the day the Great American Cleanup comes to Suburban Acres.
Our project this year is assisting Granby Elementary School (across Granby Street at 7101 Newport Ave.) with some beautification projects. We will be spreading mulch, replenishing sand in the playground sand box, doing a general clean-up, and tending the school garden (students have planted their spring seeds, so momentum is already there!).
Please join us at 9 am. This will NOT be difficult work, but it will go more quickly with more friends… and supervision for the younger ones. (If you are dropping off a youngster to participate, please see us at the sign-in table for a parental permission slip before you leave).
Refreshments, water, etc. and work gloves, as well as some rakes, shovels, brooms, and wheel barrows will be provided (please bring rakes, shovels, brooms, and wheel barrows if you have them). Please wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes.
Please join the Granby Elementary School staff, LEAP Norfolk volunteers, local Girl Scouts, and your neighbors for this event and let’s make a great memory while helping beautify our area and earn EARNN (Environmental Awards for Recycling in Norfolk Neighborhoods) points!
The Great American Clean Up is the LARGEST VOLUNTEER effort in the United States each year with 2 Million participants…come be a part of something HUGE.

4th of July Parade cancelled; picnic postponed
Regrettably the Suburban Acres Civic League, in consultation with the Mayor’s office and Norfolk Emergency Manager Jim Riddick, have decided that we must cancel this year’s 4th of July parade.
Even though the worst of Arthur should pass us by mid-day or early afternoon tomorrow, many city resources will be tied up with clearing streets from downed trees and limbs and cleaning up from flooding.
The city is moving all 4th of July events originally scheduled for July 4th to Saturday July 5th.
Please enjoy the Great American Picnic and fireworks at Towne Point Park on Saturday.
Over the next few days the board of directors will come up with an alternate neighborhood picnic event for later in July or early August.
2014 Summer Youth Leadership Scholarship
Suburban Acres Civic League is again pleased to offer our GROW Youth Leadership Scholarship. The scholarship underwrites tuition for the eXcel Leadership Academy, as well as additional opportunities facilitated by the civic league and our business and non-profit partners:
eXcel Leadership Academy, July 15-18, 2014. A program of LEAD Hampton Roads and the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, eXcel’s goal is to prepare youth for leadership positions within the community and region. The program provides leadership skills training, an up close chance to meet outstanding visionary leaders, and a “behind the scenes pass” to the Hampton Roads region.
The Suburban Acres Civic League will offer two activities during the summer focusing on local community groups and their interaction with local government and business. Missions and challenges of not-for-profit organizations, and how they help government will be emphasized.
Please return the application materials as soon as possible.
Access an informational flyer here.
